Where does silk come from?

A little bit of history for you!

Chinese legend tells that Empress His Ling Shi, wife of Emperor Huang Ti, was the first person to discover that silk was a weavable fibre.  Story has it that the Empress was one day taking tea under a mulberry tree when a cocoon fell into her cup and began to unravel.  The Empress became so enamoured with the shimmering threads, she looked further and discovered the source to be the Bombyx mori silkworm found in the white mulberry tree.  The Empress went on to develop sericulture, the cultivation of silkworms, and invented the reel and loom.  And so began the history of silk, even if it was by accident!

As you can imagine the demand for this exotic and luxurious fabric was high and the trading of it created the lucrative trade route known as the Silk Road which stretched from Eastern china to the Mediterranean Sea.

To this day silk has held its position as one of the most luxurious fibres available, high end silk yarn is used the world over allowing silk artists to create amazing, stunning pieces using so many different types of crafts.

Why don't we have an online shop?

We often get asked why we don’t have an online shop and the answer is simple – we’re old school!!  We believe in shopping the old-fashioned way, you know the way where you provide customer service by actually speaking and communicating to somebody.

Silk is so luxurious it needs to be appreciated.  Did you know it takes each silk worm six weeks of continuous eating to grow big enough to spin a silk cocoon, why then would we want people to buy the end product in less than 5 minutes without any personal touch.

It may sound like a hassle, having to actually make contact with a company but we promise you once you try our old fashioned customer service you’ll love it.

What yarns do you stock?

We stock a large range of undyed yarns from 100% pure silk to silk fibre mixes, to our fabulous range of dyed silk yarns.
